IndependenceThe Scientist I operates with a degree of independence under established policies and procedures. Normally receives sufficient guidance from other senior scientists to ensure coordination of efforts with others working on related phases of the program. Maintains contact with other laboratory professional/scientific personnel routinely, infrequent technical liaise with customers or their representatives.
Performs professional assignments within a specific scientific discipline. Applies scientific knowledge and methodology to experiments or studies designed to yield solutions to testing or development problems.
Evaluates, and implements process plans and methods for techniques suitable for day-to-day use on a routine basis. These techniques may involve adaptation of classical techniques to new situations, or new approaches.
Conducts assigned experiments or studies in a specific scientific field working independently or with others assigned to a project.
Guides and trains assigned personnel as required and advises supervisory personnel as to their progress.
Reviews the results of tests in relation to the reliability, completeness, and accuracy of the test and methods employed. Submits dispositions relative to the results of this analysis.
Performs light repairs, maintenance, and preventive maintenance on complex equipment as necessary to keep in good stable working condition.
Collaborates with colleagues in methods development and validation.
Must be able to lift and carry 30 – 40 lbs.
Must be proficient in using MS Office products.
This position requires a Bachelor of Science in chemistry or a related field degree with no experience, or an associate’s degree with two years of direct experience in assigned duties or four years directly related experience working in an analytical laboratory. Knowledge of chemical principles, theories, practices, and established methodology sufficient to perform chemical analyses on a wide variety of samples.
Familiarity with benchtop chemistry, titration, chemical batch make-up, etc. Familiarity with microscopy, gas and liquid chromatography (GC, GC/MS, HPLC), FTIR and UV-Vis Spectroscopy, and other analytical instrumentation is preferred.
Must be able to pass and maintain the NASA background check.
